Nitro cold brew is cold brew coffee that has been charged with nitrogen gas and served from a tap or a can. The tiny bubbles give it a thick, silky feel and a creamy foam head, so it tastes sweet and smooth even without milk or sugar. Cafes use a special tap. At home you can get a lighter version with a gas dispenser, but it takes some equipment.

How it is made

  1. 01

Make a cold brew concentrate and dilute it so it is ready to drink.

  2. 02

    Chill it well.

  3. 03

Pour it into a nitrogen dispenser, or a cream whipper with a food safe gas cartridge, following the maker's instructions.

  4. 04

Dispense into a glass without ice.

  5. 05

Let the foam settle for a few seconds, then drink.

Questions

Is nitro cold brew different from iced coffee?

Yes. Nitro cold brew is served cold with no ice and a foamy head. It feels creamy and sweet, and usually has no milk.

Can I make nitro cold brew without special equipment?

Not exactly. You can shake very cold cold brew hard in a jar for a little foam, but it is not the same as true nitro.
