Cafe bombon comes from Valencia in Spain. It is made with equal parts espresso and sweetened condensed milk, served in a small glass so you can see the layers. The condensed milk sinks to the bottom and the coffee floats above it. You can stir it before drinking, or sip the layers one by one. It is very sweet and creamy.
How it is made
- 01
Pour about 30 ml of sweetened condensed milk into a small glass.
- 02
Pull a single or double shot of espresso.
- 03
Pour the espresso slowly over the back of a spoon so it sits on top of the milk.
- 04
Leave the layers as they are, or stir to mix.
- 05
Serve straight away.
Brew it with Espresso machine, Moka pot

Is cafe bombon the same as Vietnamese coffee?
They are cousins. Both use sweetened condensed milk, but Vietnamese coffee is dripped through a phin and often served over ice, while a bombon uses espresso.
Can I make it without an espresso machine?
Yes. A moka pot or an AeroPress gives a strong enough coffee.
