Affogato means drowned in Italian. A scoop of vanilla ice cream, or milk ice cream, is placed in a small glass and a hot shot of espresso is poured over it, so the ice cream melts into a sweet, creamy, bitter pool. It is served as a dessert, and is easy to make at home if you have a strong coffee, such as moka pot coffee.

How it is made

  1. 01

Chill a small glass or bowl in the freezer for 10 minutes.

  2. 02

Put one large scoop of vanilla ice cream into it.

  3. 03

Pull a hot shot of espresso, or make a very strong moka pot coffee.

  4. 04

Pour the coffee over the ice cream straight away.

  5. 05

Eat with a spoon while it is still cold and creamy.

Questions

Should the espresso be hot?

Yes. The contrast between the hot coffee and the cold ice cream is what makes an affogato special.

Can I use a different ice cream?

Yes. Vanilla is classic, but chocolate, hazelnut or coffee ice cream also work. Choose one that is not too sweet.
