The AeroPress is a plastic tube with a plunger and a small paper filter. Coffee and hot water are steeped for a short time and then pressed through the filter into a cup. It was invented in 2005 by Alan Adler in the United States. It is light, almost unbreakable and a favourite of travellers, and it can make strong, espresso like coffee or clean filter style coffee.
How it is made
- 01
Put a paper filter in the cap, rinse it and fit it to the AeroPress.
- 02
Add about 15 g of medium fine ground coffee.
- 03
Pour in about 220 g of hot water and stir for 10 seconds.
- 04
Wait about 1 to 2 minutes.
- 05
Press the plunger slowly over about 30 seconds, and stop when you hear a hiss.

The Wildcard
KAIVO lists AeroPress as a way to brew The Wildcard, a light roast with orange juice, plum and black currant notes, and a clean paper filter keeps that fruit bright.
Light roast, tasting of orange juice, plums, black currant.

Can the AeroPress make espresso?
Not true espresso, because it does not reach 9 bar of pressure. It can make a small, strong, concentrated coffee that is good for milk drinks.
Should I use the upright or the inverted method?
Both work. The upright method is simpler. The inverted method stops coffee from dripping early, so it suits longer steeping times.
