What is specialty coffee, and how do you start in India?

Specialty coffee is coffee chosen for its character and traceability rather than volume.

Specialty coffee is high quality, traceable coffee roasted with care, usually from a named estate. In India, estates in the Western Ghats such as Chikmagalur, Coorg and Nilgiris grow it.

What it means

Specialty coffee is grown at altitude, picked and processed with care, and roasted in small batches. You can usually see the estate, the altitude and the process on the pack.

Why Indian estates

Indian coffee is grown under shade at altitude, which suits slow, sweet cups. All KAIVO coffees are 100% Arabica sourced exclusively from Indian estates, and each blend lists its estate, altitude and process.

How to start without studying

You do not need to learn the vocabulary. Start with a sampler, notice what you reach for, and settle on one. That is the whole idea behind the brand.

Where to begin

Take the three question finder, or start with the sampler pack of five.
