Light roast or dark roast: which coffee should you buy?

Light roasts keep more of the bean's origin character, so you taste fruit and acidity. Dark roasts trade that for body and roasted depth.

Light roast tastes brighter and fruitier with more acidity. Dark roast tastes bolder, with bitter chocolate and low acidity. Pick by how you drink it.

The short answer

If you drink black coffee slowly and like fruit and tea like clarity, choose a light roast. If you drink milk coffee or espresso and want something bold that cuts through milk, choose a dark roast. If you want one coffee that suits every morning, choose a medium roast.

What this looks like in the KAIVO range

The Leap is the lightest roast, with cherries, mandarin orange and lime. The Daily Swing is the medium house blend, with hazelnut, milk chocolate and nutmeg. The Roar is the darkest, with bitter chocolate, dark caramel and oak. The Slow Charge is a dark roast with more fruit, built for cold brew.

Acidity is not the same as bitterness

Acidity is brightness, the thing that makes citrus taste lively. Bitterness is roasted depth. A light roast is high in the first and low in the second. A dark roast is the reverse.

How to choose in one line

Fruit and clarity: The Leap. Everyday, with or without milk: The Daily Swing. Loud and chocolatey: The Roar. Iced: The Slow Charge.
