Con panna means with cream in Italian. A hot shot of espresso is topped with a swirl of lightly sweetened whipped cream, which slowly melts into the coffee. It is rich and slightly sweet but still tastes of coffee. The cold cream against the hot espresso gives it a pleasant mix of temperatures.

How it is made

  1. 01

Pull a shot or a double shot of espresso into a small cup.

Add a little cocoa or grated chocolate if you like.

  5. 05

Serve at once, before the cream melts.

Questions

Is espresso con panna the same as a Viennese coffee?

They are close. Viennese coffee is often made with a larger amount of whipped cream and sometimes a double shot. In many cafes the two names are used for the same drink.

Can I use the cream from a can?

Yes, it works for a quick drink. Fresh whipped cream tastes better and melts more slowly.
